Waka Community Foundation Ignites Global Wellness Revolution

The Waka Community International Foundation is steadily emerging as one of the most compelling grassroots wellness movements of the modern era, redefining how individuals and communities approach health in an increasingly sedentary world. Built on the simple philosophy that everyday movement can transform lives, the organisation is championing a global shift toward sustainable wellbeing through intentional walking and lifestyle discipline.

Founded on the belief that wellness should be practical, inclusive and community-driven, the foundation promotes a lifestyle model rooted in movement, nutrition, hydration, rest and strength. At its core is the simple but powerful principle that living well begins with a “waka”, a purposeful walk that stimulates both body and mind.

The organisation’s vision is ambitious: to cultivate healthier communities where individuals, families and institutions embrace everyday wellness habits that improve longevity, vitality and overall quality of life. Rather than positioning health as a luxury, the foundation frames it as a shared responsibility that must be embedded into daily living.

Through a community-first approach, the foundation encourages people from all walks of life to adopt sustainable lifestyle habits that extend beyond temporary fitness trends. The goal is not short-term transformation but a cultural shift that places wellbeing at the centre of everyday existence.

To achieve this, the foundation focuses on practical wellness pillars. These include purposeful walking, mindful nutrition, proper hydration, restorative sleep and strength training aimed at preserving muscle mass and preventing age-related decline such as Sarcopenia.

In promoting these principles, the organisation also emphasises social connection, creating safe and supportive spaces where participants can share experiences, encourage one another and build healthy habits collectively. Within this ecosystem, the journey toward wellbeing becomes communal rather than competitive.

In a move to expand its global footprint, the foundation launched the Waka International App, a digital platform that enables users to track steps, set wellness goals and connect with fellow participants across continents. The application has become a key driver of the movement’s rapid growth.

The organisation’s rising global visibility recently reached a historic milestone when it became the first Nigerian wellness initiative to feature on a billboard at Times Square in New York City, a symbolic moment that projected African-led community wellness advocacy onto the world stage.

Today, the movement boasts more than 58,000 members spread across 48 countries, reflecting the increasing appetite for preventive health initiatives driven by community engagement rather than elite fitness culture.

As part of its expanding advocacy, the foundation will host the inaugural Wakathon in Lagos on March 28, 2026, a large-scale, non-competitive community walking event designed to promote preventive health, mental wellbeing and social connection through collective movement.

The event, scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. from the Catholic Church of Divine Mercy in Lekki Phase One, will bring together families, wellness advocates and organisations to honour renowned health advocate Ade Alakija, reinforcing the foundation’s enduring message: every step matters, and lasting wellbeing begins with a single waka.
