IROKO FALLS: Grief As Investigative Reporter Juliana Francis Loses Mother At 94

Nigeria’s media community has been thrown into mourning as respected investigative journalist, Juliana Francis, announced the passing of her mother, Ezinne Chinyere Francis Onyemelam, at the age of 94.

Mrs. Onyemelam breathed her last on February 25, 2026, following a brief illness at a hospital in Abia State, drawing the curtain on a long life defined by devotion, resilience and quiet strength.

A native of Amaoba Ikputu Oboro in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, the late matriarch was widely regarded as a stabilising force within her family and community, a woman whose presence commanded reverence and affection in equal measure.

Married to the late Mr. Francis Onyemelam, she built a formidable family legacy, raising 11 children, five of whom survive her. Her lineage extends to 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, each a living testament to her enduring influence.

Those close to the family describe her as deeply spiritual and unwavering in faith, traits that anchored her household through seasons of trial and triumph. Her life, they say, was a study in perseverance.

For her daughter, Juliana, the loss is profoundly personal. In an emotional tribute, the journalist captured the depth of her grief in words laced with anguish and disbelief.

“Time rolling into time… everything so surreal… my iroko tree has fallen. How do I go on? Why should I go on? Mama, how do I go on?” she wrote, evoking the image of a towering pillar suddenly gone.

Reflecting on her mother’s life, she recalled years of health battles courageously fought and won, and the intimate bond they shared, one forged in love, discipline and enduring encouragement.

In a moving farewell, she added: “Rest in peace to my sweet mother, a woman with a generous heart. If there’s a rebirth, I would still want you to be my mom. Hug Papa for me. Tell him we miss him so much.”

Though a private funeral ceremony is being planned, with details to be announced in due course, the memory of Mrs. Onyemelam lingers, not merely as a bereaved family’s loss, but as the quiet exit of a matriarch whose legacy of faith, strength and compassion will echo across generations.
