The United States has stepped up its support for Nigeria’s counter-terrorism campaign with the delivery of vital military equipment, marking a significant boost to ongoing efforts to dismantle terrorist networks and strengthen security nationwide. The development underscores an expanding defence partnership between both countries, focused on curbing violent extremism and restoring peace to affected communities across Nigeria.
Reacting to the renewed cooperation, the Federal Government of Nigeria reaffirmed that its approach to counter-terrorism is firmly rooted in structured collaboration with international allies. Authorities stressed that all security engagements are guided by respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and international law, with a clear emphasis on protecting civilian lives, preserving national unity, and upholding the rights and dignity of every citizen, irrespective of religious or ethnic background.
Confirmation of the latest U.S. support came from the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), which announced via its official X account that U.S. forces had supplied essential military assets to Nigerian partners in Abuja. While specific details of the equipment were not disclosed, AFRICOM described the delivery as a clear demonstration of the shared security objectives between both nations.
“This delivery supports Nigeria’s ongoing operations and emphasises our shared security partnership,” AFRICOM stated.
The military assistance aligns with Nigeria’s broader push to modernise its defence architecture amid persistent security threats from terrorist and armed groups. As part of this effort, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, recently undertook an official visit to the United States to accelerate the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters from U.S.-based defence manufacturer Bell Textron.
The AH-1Z Viper is a next-generation attack helicopter fitted with advanced sensors, night-operation systems and precision-guided weapons. Defence analysts say the platform will significantly boost Nigeria’s air combat effectiveness, intelligence gathering and surveillance capabilities in counter-terrorism operations.
The renewed U.S. support follows recent joint counter-terrorism actions between Nigerian and American forces. On December 24, U.S. troops, working in collaboration with Nigerian security forces, carried out coordinated air operations against ISIS-linked elements operating in north-western Nigeria.
AFRICOM said the operation, conducted at the request of Nigerian authorities, targeted terrorist locations in Jabo, Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The mission reportedly dismantled a Lakurawa terrorist camp as part of sustained efforts to weaken extremist networks and improve security in affected communities.
Security experts say the latest developments underscore deepening defence ties between Nigeria and the United States at a critical time for regional stability in West Africa. With enhanced military assets, advanced platforms and intelligence cooperation, Nigeria is expected to scale up operations against terrorism while maintaining its commitment to lawful engagement and civilian protection.
As coordinated efforts continue, both countries have reiterated their resolve to work together to counter violent extremism and support long-term peace and security across Nigeria and the wider region.
