MMIA SABOTAGE SCANDAL: Airport Police Arrest NAHCO Staff As Conveyor Belt Is Vandalised

In the sustained efforts to ensure a safe, secure, and seamless travel environment for both Nigerians and foreign visitors, the Airport Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with the intentional damage of a conveyor belt at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

According to the press release issued by ASP Mohammed Adeola, Police Public Relations Officer, Airport Command, Lagos, the incident occurred at about 11:56 P.M on Thursday, 18th December 2025, and resulted in a temporary disruption of airport operations, leading to delays and inconvenience for arriving passengers. Following swift police intervention, the suspect, identified as one Abdullahi Ibrahim, a staff member of the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO), was arrested.

Preliminary investigations, including a detailed review of CCTV footage from the international luggage pick-up area, revealed that the suspect deliberately removed and stole the circuit breakers of the conveyor belt. The stolen components were subsequently recovered from the suspect’s office desk, confirming acts of sabotage that led to the malfunction of the facility.

The Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, CP Ogunbode Olufunke, Mnips, PhD, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident to determine the full extent of the crime and identify any other individuals who may be complicit in the act. She described the incident as a serious breach that undermines the efficient coordination of aviation operations and the comfort of travelling members of the public.

CP Ogunbode further reassured travellers and stakeholders that the Airport Police Command remains resolute in its mandate to safeguard airport infrastructure and ensure secure, orderly, and hitch-free travel, particularly during the yuletide season and beyond.

The Airport Police Command reiterates its zero-tolerance stance against acts capable of compromising aviation safety and public confidence, and urges all airport stakeholders to continue cooperating with security agencies in the collective interest of national security and public safety.
