The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT has officially handed over four bags of seized cannabis sativa to operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Marine Command, marking a significant breakthrough in the ongoing crackdown on maritime drug trafficking.
According to naval authorities, the intercepted contraband weighed approximately 172 kilograms and was confiscated on 24 November 2025 by the NNS BEECROFT Quick Response Team. Acting on actionable intelligence, the team tracked and intercepted a van suspected of transporting illicit drugs within the Ijegun Waterside corridor, leading to the swift confiscation of the narcotics.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Commander of NNS BEECROFT and newly promoted Rear Admiral P.P. Nimmyel, represented by the Executive Officer, Captain Idongesit Udoessien, emphasized that the operation aligns with the Navy’s sustained maritime security strategy. He noted that the proactive interception reflects ongoing efforts under the leadership of Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, Admiralty Medal, to combat criminal activities across Nigeria’s waterways, with particular focus on drug trafficking, smuggling, and the illicit transport of contraband.
Rear Admiral Nimmyel reiterated the Navy’s commitment to deepening inter-agency collaboration and maintaining enhanced surveillance to safeguard Nigeria’s coastal zones against threats that undermine national security and public safety.
He reiterated the Nigerian Navy is committed to working with other sister agencies to protect Nigerian’s maritime domain and ensure safety of lives and properties. Captain Udoessien commended the vigilance and professionalism of naval personnel and urged the public to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information to enhance safety across the state.
Accordingly, the seized contraband was handed over to Deputy Commander of Narcotics (DCN) Morrison Udo, a representative of the NDLEA, for further investigation and necessary action.
