In a decisive move to strengthen command efficiency and operational effectiveness across Nigeria’s maritime frontlines, the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has approved the appointment and redeployment of 65 Rear Admirals to key strategic positions within the Nigerian Navy (NN), Defence Headquarters (DHQ), and Tri-Service institutions.
The large-scale postings, approved on Thursday, October 30, 2025, mark one of the most extensive senior officer rotations under Vice Admiral Abbas since assuming office as the 23rd Indigenous Chief of the Naval Staff. The move reflects the Navy’s renewed drive to enhance its operational readiness and fulfill its constitutional mandate of safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain.
According to a statement released by the Director of Information, Nigerian Navy, Commodore A. Adams-Aliu, the appointments cut across naval headquarters, commands, and specialized institutions, ensuring continuity, innovation, and effective service delivery.
Among the newly assigned officers:
**Rear Admiral Suleiman Abdullahi, formerly at the Defence Headquarters, is now Chief of Logistics, Naval Headquarters.
**Rear Admiral Kasim Bushi moves from the Naval Training Command to the International Maritime Institute of Nigeria (IMION) as Executive Director.
**Rear Admiral Suleiman Dahun becomes Director of Defence Cooperation, DHQ, while Rear Admiral Anenechukwu Ezenma assumes duty as Director of Lessons Learnt, also at DHQ.
**Rear Admiral Ibrahim Shehu retains his position as Admiral Superintendent, Naval Dockyard Limited.

Additional leadership adjustments affected top-level directors and managing directors of Navy-owned enterprises and research bureaus, including the Defence Research and Development Bureau (DRDB), Defence Space Agency (DSA), Naval Engineering Services, and Navy Holdings subsidiaries.
Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, in his congratulatory message to the newly appointed senior officers, urged them to demonstrate integrity, diligence, and patriotism in their new roles.
He emphasized that the appointments are not only based on merit and professional competence but are also designed to reposition the Navy for greater efficiency in tackling emerging maritime security threats, protecting national assets, and advancing Nigeria’s blue economy agenda.
“These postings are strategic realignments aimed at building stronger leadership depth within the Nigerian Navy,” the CNS stated. “All appointees are expected to justify the confidence reposed in them and remain committed to the ideals of service, loyalty, and discipline.”
The redeployment of 65 Rear Admirals underscores the Navy’s evolving leadership structure and aligns with ongoing reforms aimed at improving fleet management, inter-agency cooperation, and technological innovation within the maritime sector.
By aligning experienced flag officers with specialized commands, the Navy seeks to deepen its operational footprint across the Gulf of Guinea, enhance maritime domain awareness, and strengthen Nigeria’s contribution to regional security initiatives.
