Maritime Journalists Form United Network To Strengthen Industry Coverage

The Nigerian maritime media landscape has taken a new turn with the unveiling of the **Network of Nigerian Maritime Journalists (NNMJ)**, a coalition designed to foster unity and provide a stronger voice for professionals covering the sector.

The body, which officially announced its presence to journalists, government agencies, and critical industry stakeholders, said the move became necessary to address the fragmentation among maritime reporters and ensure greater cohesion under one umbrella.

Membership of the NNMJ is drawn from all existing maritime journalists’ beat associations, including the League of Maritime Editors (LEAGUE), Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN), Maritime Journalists’ Association of Nigeria (MAJAN), Shipping Correspondents Association of Nigeria (SCAN), Online Media Association of Nigeria (OMAN), and the Congress of Nigerian Maritime Media Practitioners (CONMMEP). It also opens its doors to independent maritime journalists not affiliated with any group.

In a statement signed by the Chairman, **Elder Dele Aderibigbe**, and the Public Relations Officer, **Jerry Aguigbo**, the coalition called for the support of journalists, government agencies, parastatals, and critical maritime stakeholders to make the initiative a success.

According to the statement, the new body intends to roll out programmes in due course that will enhance seamless industry coverage and ensure maritime journalists receive the recognition they deserve. The coalition also decried the perception that maritime reporters have in recent times been “less regarded and treated like orphans,” pledging to reverse that trend.

The group expressed appreciation to maritime journalists for their loyalty and to stakeholders who have supported the cause, assuring that the NNMJ will work towards advancing the welfare of its members while strengthening industry reportage.
