The Partnership Against Violent Extremism (PAVE) Network has called for urgent, collective action to stem the rise of violent extremism in Nigeria, warning that insecurity is no longer confined to the North but is steadily creeping into the Southwest. The warning was issued at a sensitization and engagement forum held in Lagos, organized in collaboration with the Media Against Violent Extremism (MAVE). The event brought together journalists, civil society groups, security experts, and community leaders from Lagos and Ogun states, where early warning signs of insecurity are emerging.
Speaking at the forum, PAVE Network’s media consultant and coordinator, Senator Iroegbu, stressed that violent extremism should be viewed beyond the lens of security. He explained that poor governance, inequality, and lack of basic amenities provide fertile ground for extremist ideologies, noting that when young people lack opportunities, they become vulnerable to manipulation. He emphasized that defeating extremism requires a whole-of-society approach, pointing out that extremists live within communities and that security cannot be left to the police and military alone.
Journalists at the forum were urged to embrace conflict-sensitive reporting. Mrs. Evelyn Usman, Deputy Editor with Vanguard Newspaper, observed that while the media can inflame tensions through bias or sensationalism, it can equally foster peace by amplifying victims’ voices, promoting unity, and reporting responsibly. Similarly, Mrs. Precious Igbonwelundu, Assistant News Editor at The Nation, highlighted the duty of media and civil society to flag early warning signs before they escalate. She warned that violent extremism is no longer a distant concern, stressing that it affects everyone regardless of tribe or religion.
Alhaji (Prince) Awofeso Rasheed Ololade, CEO of Children and Community Protection Network, urged the government to take stronger measures in arms control, border security, and national data management. He lamented the lack of a reliable national database, which makes tracking criminals almost impossible, and stressed the importance of instilling tolerance and unity in the younger generation starting from the school system.
The forum concluded with a strong message that violent extremism is spreading beyond the North and that poverty, poor governance, and inequality remain its major drivers. Participants underscored that security must begin at the community level, reviving the spirit of being one another’s keeper. They also called on the government to prioritize youth empowerment, data management, and inclusive governance while charging the media to focus on national interest and avoid sensationalism.
The PAVE forum was not just a dialogue but a wake-up call. Stakeholders agreed that preventing violent extremism is everyone’s responsibility and that with community vigilance, responsible journalism, and accountable governance, Nigeria can halt the spread of violence before it spirals out of control. The message was clear: see something, say something, because the future of communities depends on collective action.
