The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old woman, Somtochukwu Nwafor, in connection with the gruesome murder and mutilation of a pregnant nurse in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State.
According to the police, the arrest was made on July 25, 2025, with the help of members of the Umueri village in the Ogbunike community. The mutilated body of the victim, a trained nurse, was recently found in a soakaway pit in the area.
During interrogation, the suspect confessed to being the girlfriend of the prime suspect, Chiemerie Obika Elobisi, who is currently on the run. Nwafor reportedly admitted she was called in by Elobisi to clean up the bloodstains after the nurse had been murdered. She also revealed that the victim’s body parts were sold to native doctors in the area.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the nurse was lured to the suspect’s residence under the pretext of administering medication.
Acting on information from Nwafor, operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) raided a shrine in the early hours of July 29, 2025. The shrine, allegedly owned by a native doctor, Nwafor Chibunna Ofornwatadile of Itima Amawa Village in Ogbunike, was the site of a grim discovery — suspected human parts wrapped in nylon bags.
The police have since launched a manhunt for the fleeing Elobisi and other alleged collaborators and buyers of human parts.
In his reaction, the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the act, describing it as “inhumane, criminal, and an affront to public morality and the sanctity of life.” He urged members of the public with useful information to come forward, assuring that the identities of informants will be protected.
The police have vowed to continue their investigations and bring all culprits involved in the horrific crime to justice.
