In a bid to strengthen Nigeria’s cross-border trade processes and deepen inter-agency cooperation, the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has paid a strategic working visit to the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun 1 Area Command, Idiroko.
The visit, led by the NSC’s Deputy Director of Trade Services, Ms. Adaora Nwonu, on behalf of the Executive Secretary/CEO, Dr. Pius Akutah, MON, centered on fortifying operational ties with the Customs Command and identifying practical strategies to eliminate trade barriers along Nigeria’s western corridor.
During the meeting with the Customs leadership, discussions highlighted the shared responsibilities of both agencies in streamlining border procedures, promoting ethical conduct, and supporting the Federal Government’s agenda for regional economic integration and efficient logistics.
Ms. Nwonu reiterated the Council’s readiness to work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service to create a more predictable and seamless environment for shippers and other players within the trade value chain.
“The Nigerian Shippers’ Council remains committed to supporting Customs and all relevant agencies in achieving a robust trade facilitation framework. Our aim is to eliminate bottlenecks, improve transparency, and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s economic development,” she said.
Receiving the NSC team, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Godwin Otunla, commended the Council’s continued engagement and expressed optimism about the prospects of deeper collaboration between the agencies.
He assured that the Nigeria Customs Service is open to synergies that will help improve the efficiency of cargo movement, combat smuggling, and enhance transparency at the nation’s borders.
As part of the engagement, Comptroller Otunla led the NSC delegation on a tour of the Command’s facilities, including an inspection of the office space allocated for the Council’s proposed **Border Information Centre**. The Centre is expected to improve information flow, promote compliance, and serve as a resource hub for stakeholders engaged in cross-border trade.
The visit is part of the NSC’s broader strategy to strengthen stakeholder engagement and support the development of a more transparent, secure, and efficient border and port ecosystem across Nigeria.
