The Nigerian Army has confirmed that a minor explosion occurred on Thursday at Ilese Barracks, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, but assured that the situation was swiftly brought under control without any loss of life or injuries.
According to a statement by Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, the incident took place in the early hours of August 14, 2025, within one of the storage buildings of the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter Improvised Explosive Device Squadron.
The localized blast triggered a small fire, but troops from the 12 Field Engineer Regiment, in collaboration with the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service, quickly contained the outbreak. The Army said the damage was limited to the affected building and some stored materials, while a detailed assessment is ongoing to determine the extent of material loss.
Residents of Ilese and surrounding communities were urged to remain calm as investigations into the exact cause of the incident are underway. The Nigerian Army pledged to work with relevant agencies to prevent a recurrence.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of its personnel and members of neighbouring communities,” the statement added.
