…Bishop Odedeji Hails Her as a Symbol of God’s Blessings
It was a day of joy, gratitude, and reverence as family members, friends, associates, and the Anglican community gathered to honour Dame Rebecca Aikhomu, wife of the late Admiral Augustus Aikhomu, former Military Vice President of Nigeria, on the occasion of her 85th birthday.
The thanksgiving service, held at the Church of Pentecost, Diocese of Lagos (Anglican Communion), Festac Town, Lagos, drew dignitaries from across Nigeria, including guests from Edo State, clergy members, government officials, and senior military officers.
Presiding over the service, the Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos West, Rt. Rev. Dr. James Olusola Odedeji, praised Dame Aikhomu as a beacon of grace, faith, and impactful living. “Mama’s life is a testament to the blessings of God,” he said. “She is a woman of selflessness and quiet strength who has touched many lives through her generosity, her faith, and her unwavering support for the church and community.”
Bishop Odedeji urged the octogenarian to continue living with heaven in focus, commending her steadfastness and devotion to God. He described her as a benefactor to the church and an inspiration to younger generations, reminding her that her legacy of service will speak for generations to come.
The Vicar/Archdeacon, Ven. Oluwaseun B. Dokunmu, also lauded the celebrant’s life of service, calling it a “fulfilled life” characterized by generational impact, compassion, and humility. “You have lived your life for God and for others. God has kept you because of the many people you continue to bless,” he remarked.
The service featured scriptural readings, hymns rendered by the church choir led by Mr. Stephen Adeola, Mr. Luke Odubiyi, Mr. Tochi Ihejirika, Dr. Jude Obi, and Chief Olusola Fadipe, and heartfelt tributes from family, friends, and associates.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Mrs. Vinitha Nimmyel described her mother as “a woman of faith, discipline, and integrity,” whose example has shaped the lives of her children, church, and community. Dame Aikhomu, in turn, expressed gratitude to God for sustaining her life and thanked all present for their love and support. “I give all the glory to God for His mercy and faithfulness. I am humbled by the love shown to me today,” she said.
Among those in attendance were the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, representatives of the Lagos State Governor, heads of paramilitary agencies, and other high-ranking personalities.
The celebration continued with a reception at the Naval Dockyard Limited, Victoria Island, where guests fellowshipped, sang, and danced in honoir of a woman many described as a “matriarch of faith and dignity.”
Dame Rebecca Aikhomu remains an enduring figure in Nigeria’s history and an unwavering pillar of the Anglican faith—a life lived in service to God and humanity.
