The announcement was made at a formal launch event hosted at Ecobank’s head office in Lagos. The GET.Invest EDGE Finance Programme is designed to equip local banks and financial institutions with the tools, training, and expertise required to effectively support and scale renewable energy projects in Nigeria.

Country Coordinator for GET.Invest Nigeria, Lawrence Edeke, said the initiative seeks to build critical capacity within the financial sector to enable Nigeria’s transition to sustainable energy.

“The EDGE Finance Programme is about strengthening local institutions and enabling them to play a critical role in Nigeria’s energy transition. Ecobank’s selection reflects its strong commitment to sustainable finance,” Edeke said.

EDGE Finance Advisor, Kofo Oduntan, emphasized that Ecobank was selected after a rigorous process that involved evaluating expressions of interest and interviews with senior leadership.

“Ecobank stood out for its clear purpose in green energy financing, strong institutional alignment, and senior-level commitment. We are confident that Ecobank will play a major role in advancing the EDGE Programme’s goals in Nigeria,” she noted.

Speaking at the programme’s kickoff, Biyi Olagbami, Executive Director and Chief Risk Officer at Ecobank Nigeria, expressed pride in the bank’s selection and reaffirmed its leadership in sustainability-focused banking.

“Our participation in the EDGE Finance Programme reinforces our position as a front-runner in sustainable finance in Nigeria. It will enhance our capacity to develop green finance products tailored to our market, support national energy transition goals, and further strengthen our brand as an environmentally responsible institution,” Olagbami stated.

The GET.Invest programme, co-funded by the European Union, Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Austria, officially launched in Nigeria in February 2025. Its EDGE Finance service provides technical assistance, targeted training, and mentorship to financial institutions to expand their involvement in financing renewable energy initiatives.

Ecobank Nigeria’s inclusion in the programme marks a significant step forward in advancing access to clean energy and positioning the Nigerian banking sector as a key enabler of the country’s sustainable development agenda.
