The Anambra State Police Command, in a coordinated joint security operation, on Tuesday, July 9, 2025, successfully contained a violent shooting incident carried out by armed hoodlums at the Oko and Ekwulobia flyover areas in Aguata Local Government Area. The swift response of the security team led to the demobilisation of one of the assailants and the recovery of arms and vehicles used in the operation.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, operatives recovered an AK-47 rifle, an automatic pump-action gun, and four vehicles believed to have been used by the attackers. The recovered vehicles include a red Toyota Camry with registration number ENU 58 SC, a custom-coloured GLK Mercedes Benz without a number plate, a golden-coloured Lexus 330 with registration number ENU 815 AP, and an ash-coloured Toyota Highlander with registration number GDD 517 RW.
The Police said the hoodlums had opened fire indiscriminately under the Ekwulobia flyover, resulting in chaos and the tragic death of two unsuspecting civilians. A security vehicle—specifically, a brown Toyota Sienna reportedly belonging to the Anambra State Vigilante Group—was also set ablaze during the attack.
In a related development, the Oko Divisional Police Headquarters came under attack from armed criminals. However, officers on duty repelled the assault without suffering any casualties. The Police confirmed that an aggressive manhunt is ongoing to track down the fleeing assailants.
The State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered the deployment of additional security measures to the affected areas. Residents are urged to remain calm and law-abiding as operatives continue to maintain a heavy presence and restore public confidence.
The bodies of the deceased victims have been recovered and deposited in the morgue. The Police assured that further updates on the operation and investigation would be communicated in due course.
