On the occasion of the 2024 Day of the Seafarer, celebrated on June 25th, the President of the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) Nigeria, Dr. Odunayo Ani, extended heartfelt appreciation to Nigerian seafarers for their crucial role in maintaining global trade.
Dr. Ani, who also serves as a director at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), highlighted the theme of this year’s celebration, “Seafarers’ Contribution to Making the Maritime Sector a Safer Workplace.” She acknowledged the safety-conscious efforts of seafarers, emphasizing their adherence to rigorous training and safety protocols which are vital to ensuring smooth and sustainable trade processes at sea.
“On this 2024 Day of the Seafarer celebration, WISTA Nigeria is proudly appreciating seafarers all around the world and particularly our Nigerian seafarers. We are proud of you and we appreciate the sacrifices you make to help the world trade,” Dr. Ani stated.
She commended the diligent work of marine engineers, ship captains, and all others involved in the maritime industry, noting their significant contributions to global trade. Dr. Ani expressed pride in the Nigerian seafarers’ commitment to safety, which supports various maritime activities including shipping, fishing, deep-sea mining, and international travel.
The Day of the Seafarer, established by a resolution at the 2010 Diplomatic Conference in Manila, aims to recognize the essential role seafarers play in international seaborne trade, the global economy, and civil society. The resolution encourages governments, shipping organizations, companies, and all stakeholders to promote and celebrate this day meaningfully.
Dr. Ani’s message reflects a deep appreciation for the seafaring community, underscoring their indispensable role in global trade and the maritime sector’s safety.
