The Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) Nigeria has celebrated the historic appointments of two prominent women to leadership positions in the maritime industry in West Africa, describing the development as a major boost for gender representation and inclusive governance.

Madam Jemilat Mahamah has been appointed Chairman of the Board of the Ghana Maritime Authority, while Ms. Iroghama Ogbeifun has been named a board member of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a statement issued by WISTA Nigeria, the association hailed Madam Mahamah’s appointment as a pivotal moment for Ghana and the wider maritime community. Her elevation was described as a symbol of visionary leadership and dedicated service to the maritime industry.

“We are immensely proud of Madam Mahamah’s achievement,” said Dr. Odunayo Ani, President of WISTA Nigeria. “Her leadership promises bold reforms and strategic progress for Ghana’s maritime sector.”

Similarly, WISTA Nigeria lauded the appointment of Ms. Ogbeifun, CEO of Starzs Investments and a long-standing member of the association, to the board of NIMASA. The association noted that her inclusion reflects the increasing influence of women in maritime leadership roles in Nigeria.

“Her appointment is a powerful affirmation of women’s capacity to lead and transform the industry,” Dr. Ani added.

WISTA Nigeria described both appointments as significant milestones that signal the rising impact of female leadership across West Africa’s maritime space. The association reaffirmed its commitment to promoting women’s advancement and regional cooperation in the industry.

“These are not just personal victories; they are victories for every woman in maritime and a step forward for inclusive governance,” the statement added.

WISTA Nigeria called on other institutions and stakeholders to embrace and support gender diversity in leadership, particularly in key sectors like shipping, logistics, and marine administration.
