Western Naval Command Seeks Strengthened Collaboration With Media For National Security

The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Michael Gregory Oamen, has emphasized the critical role of media collaboration in addressing national security challenges. Speaking at a New Year engagement with defense correspondents at the Western Naval Command headquarters in Apapa, Lagos, Rear Admiral Oamen highlighted the importance of bridging the communication gap to counter misinformation and foster a secure environment.

“In addition to our kinetic engagement, we prioritize non-kinetic efforts that involve building strong relationships with the larger society. It is essential for every stakeholder to play their part in ensuring national security,” he stated.

He underscored the rapid pace of information dissemination in today’s world, stressing the need to effectively manage the information landscape to mitigate the spread of misinformation. “Misinformation can escalate simple incidents into crises.

To prevent this, we aim to engage with journalists within our sphere to close communication gaps. Through these interactions, we can address misconceptions and contribute collectively to national security objectives,” he added.

Rear Admiral Oamen expressed gratitude to the media for its role in 2024, noting that their efforts ensured the public was informed about the Navy’s activities and commitment to its constitutional duties.

As the Western Naval Command prepares for an active year in 2025, the FOC disclosed plans for numerous exercises and operations, calling for continued media support and collaboration. “The Western Naval Command, as the Navy’s premier operational command, will rely on your understanding and partnership to inform the public about our efforts. Together, we can ensure a safer and better nation for everyone,” he remarked.

The FOC reiterated that national security benefits everyone and cautioned against the misuse of information to undermine societal stability. He concluded by affirming the Navy’s dedication to its constitutional mandate and its commitment to working with all stakeholders for the collective good of the nation.
