Western Naval Command Holds Second Quarter Route March To Boost Fitness, Operational Readiness

In a continued effort to enhance physical fitness, operational efficiency, and esprit de corps among naval personnel, the Western Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy conducted its second quarter route march for 2025 on Saturday, June 21.

The route march, which commenced at 0600 hours, covered a distance of approximately 10 kilometers through Alakija and Festac environs in Lagos. The exercise drew a large turnout of officers and ratings from the Command, alongside other uniformed personnel.

Speaking at the event, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Michael Oamen, emphasized the importance of physical and mental fitness in meeting the demands of military service, especially amid the country’s evolving security challenges.

“It gives me great pleasure to be here today to mark this year’s Second Quarter Route March. This event is targeted at keeping personnel fit for military duties, fostering esprit de corps among other uniform services, and assuring neighbouring communities of the Nigerian Navy’s resolve to provide effective security,” Rear Admiral Oamen stated.

He underscored that physical fitness and mental alertness are essential components of the Chief of the Naval Staff’s Strategic Directive, and highlighted the Navy’s commitment to routine physical training through scheduled events such as the quarterly route marches and Wednesday sports activities.

“Remember, a healthy mind requires a healthy body to function properly. I congratulate everyone who took part in the march and urge all personnel to continue carrying out their duties with renewed vigour and forthrightness,” he added.

Representing the FOC at the event, the Western Naval Command Operational Officer, Commodore Abdulrahman Muhammed, echoed similar sentiments. He reiterated that the route march aligns with the Nigerian Navy’s calendar of events and supports the Chief of Naval Staff’s strategic vision.

“As you know, military service demands discipline, regimentation, and physical fitness. Today’s second quarter route march is part of our quarterly exercise designed to keep our personnel combat-ready,” Commodore Muhammed said.

He confirmed that the march began at 0600 hours and covered about 10 kilometers within the Alakija-Festac axis. Commending the turnout, he encouraged officers and ratings to continue engaging in regular exercise to improve their discipline and operational performance.

“The more physically fit a personnel is, the more effective and disciplined he becomes. This is vital for the successful execution of our constitutional duties,” he noted.

The route march concluded with refreshments and camaraderie, reinforcing the importance of unity and wellness among naval personnel.
