The 2025 edition of the Western Naval Command Small Arms Firing Exercise/Range Classification (SAFEX) commenced on Tuesday, April 15, with an opening ceremony held at the 192 Battalion Shooting Range in Owode, Ogun State.
Organized in line with the Nigerian Navy’s official schedule of events, the SAFEX is aimed at enhancing the marksmanship and combat readiness of naval personnel. The exercise is being simultaneously conducted across the Western Naval Command’s Area of Responsibility (AOR) at three designated locations: Owode, the 35 Artillery Brigade at Alamala Barracks in Abeokuta, and the 323 Artillery Regiment Military Range in Ita-Ogbolu, Akure.
A total of 350 officers and ratings from various ships, units, and naval establishments within the Lagos area are taking part in ten different firing events. The exercises involve the use of assorted small arms including the GPMG, AK47/AK56, M70-AB2, Tavor rifles, and pistols, tested from multiple positions and distances.
The opening ceremony at Owode was officiated by Commodore A. Mohammed, Command Operations Officer, who represented the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral MG Oamen.
The SAFEX serves as a critical platform for evaluating the shooting proficiency of naval personnel while reinforcing operational discipline, weapon handling, and safety procedures. The exercise is expected to continue over the next few days across the listed locations.
