The Western Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy on Thursday, April 17, 2025, successfully concluded its Small Arms Firing Exercise (SAFEX) and Range Classification for the Lagos Area, with a resounding affirmation of the Command’s commitment to operational readiness, discipline, and teamwork.
Speaking during the closing ceremony, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Michael Oamen who was represented by the Chief Staff Officer, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Sulaiman Dantsoho Ibrahim lauded the officers, ratings, instructors, and support teams for their exceptional performance, professionalism, and unity displayed throughout the exercise.
“As we stand here with the dust settling on the range and the echoes of rifle fire fading, today has been a fulfilling day,” the FOC remarked. “The SAFEX 2025 was not merely an assessment of our marksmanship, but a reinforcement of the grit, brotherhood, and discipline that define our Command.”
He commended the SAFEX Organising Committee for their efficiency despite the limited preparation time and specially recognized the sharpshooters who excelled on the range. The Range Coaches from the 35 Artillery Brigade Range in Alamola, Abeokuta, Ogun State, were also applauded for their outstanding professionalism in managing the exercise.
The FOC charged all participants, including members of the press, to carry forward the discipline and teamwork cultivated during the exercise into daily naval operations. He stressed that true readiness is not a one-off event but a continuous commitment to excellence.
“There’s an adage that says, ‘The sea doesn’t care about your rank — it cares about your readiness.’ Today, you have proved that we are ready,” he stated. “But remember, readiness is built on every drill, every watch, and every decision to go the extra mile.”
Declaring the SAFEX 2025 officially closed, the FOC reaffirmed the Navy’s dedication to safeguarding national interests and urged all personnel to remain vigilant, focused, and service-driven.
“May the lessons of today’s exercise define our dedication to the service of the Nigerian Navy and the nation at large. God bless, and onward together,” he concluded.
