Wema Bank, Nigeria’s oldest indigenous financial institution and a trailblazer in digital banking innovation, commemorated its 80th anniversary in spectacular fashion with an unforgettable event themed “Timeless Elegance.” Held at the prestigious Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, the celebration masterfully blended history, glamour, innovation, and national pride—reaffirming Wema’s enduring legacy and its bold vision for the future.
The event was not just a typical gala but a fully immersive brand experience that showcased the journey of Wema Bank—from its roots as Agbonmagbe Bank to becoming a tech-driven, customer-focused powerhouse. Guests were treated to a visual and experiential narrative that captured the bank’s transformation over eight decades.
From the outset, the stage was set with stunning historical displays, immersive hallways, and a futuristic setup that turned the venue into a living museum of Wema’s past and future. The night opened with electrifying performances from Sounds of ALAT winners—Kareem, King Breezy, and Kesty—who thrilled the audience with their original compositions and a heartfelt tribute to the bank, accompanied by celebrated music producer, Cobhams Asuquo.
Renowned vocalist Yinka Davies added a patriotic touch with a soulful rendition of the Nigerian National Anthem, setting the tone for an evening rich in heritage and national pride.
Veteran actor Chief Femi Branch and celebrated media personality Olive Emodi co-hosted the event with poise and charisma, keeping the audience engaged and entertained from start to finish. A major highlight came when eight customers were each surprised with a ₦1 million gift, while 80 others won ₦80,000 each—an act of gratitude that underscored Wema’s customer-first approach.
In a moving welcome speech, Wema Bank’s Chairman, Dr. Oluwayemi Oluwanishola, reflected on the courage and vision of the bank’s founder, Late Chief Okupe, who established Agbonmagbe Bank during colonial rule. Her remarks captured the spirit of resilience and purpose that has defined the bank for eight decades.
The night’s musical acts brought Nigerian pop culture to life, with star-studded performances from Wande Coal, 9ice, Fuji maestro Sir Shina Ayuba, and a show-stopping finale by Davido. Spoken-word artists Kehinde Adolo and IBQuake added layers of reflection, connecting the bank’s legacy with broader cultural narratives.
Wema Bank’s CEO, Moruf Oseni, delivered a visionary speech outlining the bank’s ambitious roadmap, centered on technology, innovation, and inclusive banking. He emphasized the bank’s commitment to transforming customer experience and further strengthening stakeholder relationships.
One of the evening’s most significant moments was the unveiling of a commemorative coffee table book that chronicles the bank’s evolution. Surrounded by former and current board members, executives, and managing directors, the launch symbolized institutional memory, resilience, and purposeful leadership.
The celebration also served as a powerful statement of stakeholder engagement. Notable dignitaries in attendance included Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and Nigeria’s First Lady, represented by Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim. Business leaders, celebrities, influencers, and industry stakeholders also graced the event, reaffirming Wema’s relevance across government, business, and popular culture.
As the evening drew to a close with DJ Sose’s pulsating afterparty, it was clear that Wema Bank’s 80th anniversary was more than a celebration—it was a bold declaration of legacy, innovation, and continuity. The theme “Timeless Elegance” was not only a reflection of the event’s grandeur but also a fitting tribute to the bank’s enduring spirit and future-forward mission.
