An explosion rocked a CCTV camera dealer shop along Kodesho Street near the bustling Computer Village in Ikeja, Lagos, on Friday evening, prompting swift emergency response and the commencement of a full-scale investigation by the Lagos State Police Command.
The incident, which occurred around 6:35 pm, sent shockwaves through the area, causing panic among residents and traders in the popular commercial hub. According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the scene was immediately secured by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, the Mobile Police Detachment, and other conventional police teams to ensure public safety.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, was on the scene within minutes to conduct an on-the-spot assessment and reassure the public. “The Command is fully on top of the situation,” CP Jimoh said, urging residents to remain calm as the area has been rendered safe.
Preliminary reports indicate that five individuals who were in and around the affected shop sustained various degrees of injuries. They were promptly rescued and rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for medical treatment. No fatalities have been reported at this time.
While the exact cause of the explosion remains unknown, the Police Command has initiated a thorough investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident. Experts from the EOD unit have already conducted a sweep of the area to rule out any secondary threats and to facilitate forensic analysis.
Residents and business owners have been advised to continue with their lawful activities without fear, as the police maintain a strong presence in the area to prevent further disruption.
“The Command wishes to assure the public of its unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and security across Lagos State,” the statement read.
Further updates are expected as investigations progress.
