A romantic reunion between 35-year-old Emeka Nwogu and his ex-girlfriend turned into a nightmare after the lady, alongside her younger brother and members of a cult group, allegedly orchestrated a violent robbery, carting away valuables and digital assets worth over N15.5 million.
The shocking incident occurred along Ago Palace Way in Lagos, shortly after Valentine’s Day, when Nwogu decided to spend time with his former lover, 25-year-old Ogochukwu Emmanuella. The duo had lodged in a hotel to mark the celebration and had planned to dine out the following day—unaware of the sinister plot brewing behind the scenes.
According to police sources, while enjoying a meal at a restaurant, Emmanuella requested they return to the hotel for her to use the restroom. Nwogu reportedly grew suspicious when they bypassed their hotel bus stop, but she assured him it was a minor detour. Upon alighting at another stop, they were ambushed by armed men who dragged them to a secluded estate, brutally assaulted Nwogu, and forced him to reveal the passwords to his Bitcoin, Binance, and Trust Wallet accounts. The attackers stole three mobile phones and withdrew approximately $9,700 (about N12.5 million) from his cryptocurrency wallets before fleeing.
In a twist of events, Nwogu and Emmanuella jointly reported the incident at Ago Palace Police Station. However, suspicion fell on Emmanuella after a security guard at the crime scene confidentially informed officers that one of the assailants was frequently seen in her company. Confronted with the revelation, she confessed that her younger brother and his friends carried out the attack, claiming she acted out of anger after seeing WhatsApp chats between Nwogu and other women.
Following her confession, the case was transferred to the Commissioner of Police Special Squad 1, which launched a manhunt for the accomplices. Although Emmanuella’s father returned N3 million—allegedly part of the N5 million cut meant for his daughter—her brother remained on the run.
The police later arrested four other suspects identified as Ogbuka Tochukwu (22), John Wisdom (25), Odora Michael (24), and Babatunde Ibrahim (20), all confirmed members of the Aiye Confraternity. Recovered items included a locally made gun, four cartridges, a battle axe bearing the cult’s insignia, and N7.5 million in cash.
Speaking with reporters, the victim expressed his deep pain and disappointment. “I’m devastated. We spent Valentine’s night together and had a good time. The next day, while we were at a lounge, I noticed she kept stepping out to take calls. I never imagined she was plotting to rob me with her brother and cultists,” he said. “I want to thank the Commissioner of Police and his special squad for their swift response and thorough investigation.”
The Lagos State Police Command continues to investigate the matter and pursue the fleeing suspects.
