The Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has officially handed over an Emerging Technologies Centre (ETC) to the Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH), Igbesa, Ogun State.
The Centre, located on the institution’s campus, is designed to enhance students’ learning experiences while fostering digital innovation, research, and development. It aligns with the federal government’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and promoting digital inclusion across Nigeria.
A key highlight of the inauguration ceremony, held on Thursday, was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the USPF and OGITECH, aimed at ensuring the effective utilization and sustainability of the ICT project.
Equipped with 100 desktop computers, emerging technology applications, and high-speed internet connectivity, the ETC will provide students and faculty with access to cutting-edge digital tools essential for research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, USPF Secretary, Yomi Arowosafe, described the Centre as a crucial investment in Nigeria’s digital future.
“This facility represents more than just bricks and mortar. It embodies a vision, a commitment, and an investment in the future of Ogun State and, by extension, our nation,” Arowosafe stated.
He emphasized that under the leadership of Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, and Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, the USPF remains committed to providing ICT access to unserved and underserved communities across Nigeria.
Arowosafe highlighted the ETC’s role in advancing digital literacy, stating that students will gain hands-on experience in fields such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, and cybersecurity. Faculty members will also benefit from improved teaching and research resources, while startups and small businesses within the community can leverage the facility for innovation and entrepreneurship.
“We believe that this project will contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic development, and we are eager to see its long-term impact,” he added.
As part of the sustainability strategy, Arowosafe stressed that the signed MoU would ensure OGITECH takes ownership of the project, preventing it from falling into disuse.
The Rector of OGITECH, Dr. Abiodun Oluseye, lauded the NCC and USPF for choosing the institution as the project’s beneficiary.
“We are grateful for this initiative and fully committed to ensuring its sustainability. The ETC will be put to optimal use for the benefit of our students, faculty, and the larger community,” Dr. Oluseye affirmed.
Established by the Federal Government, the USPF plays a pivotal role in expanding ICT access to rural, unserved, and underserved communities in Nigeria, driving greater social inclusion and equitable digital transformation.
