In a bid to champion environmental responsibility and foster sustainable practices, Union Bank of Nigeria, a leading financial institution, partnered with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) to commemorate World Environment Day 2023.

World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5th, serves as a global platform to raise awareness and mobilize action towards urgent environmental issues.

The theme for the 2023 campaign, “#BeatPlasticPollution; Solutions to Plastic Pollution,” calls for worldwide efforts to combat the escalating problem of plastic pollution.

Plastic pollution has emerged as a critical global crisis, posing threats to ecosystems, wildlife, and human well-being. This year’s World Environment Day aims to generate awareness and encourage individuals, communities, and organizations to take decisive action and make a positive impact on the environment.

This can be achieved by reducing plastic consumption, embracing sustainable alternatives, and advocating for responsible plastic waste management.

To promote awareness about environmental responsibility and inspire collective action, Union Bank employees partnered with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation to volunteer at Aguda Junior Grammar School in Surulere, Greg Girls Junior High School in Surulere, and Okun Ajah Community Senior Secondary School in Okun Ajah.

The primary focus was to educate students on the detrimental effects of plastic pollution on the environment.

The sessions highlighted the significance of reducing plastic consumption, reusing plastic items, and providing practical tips for sustainable recycling. Also, the Bank generously donated waste bins to each school to encourage recycling and facilitate students’ active participation in reducing plastic waste.

During a discussion about Union Bank’s initiatives for World Environment Day, the Chief Brand and Marketing Officer of the bank, Olufunmilola Aluko, expressed the following thoughts:

“At Union Bank, we are resolute in our commitment to be a sustainability champion. This year’s focus on tackling the pervasive issue of plastic pollution resonates deeply with our commitment to environmental sustainability. We proudly partner with NCF to educate students on solutions to beat plastic pollution. By raising awareness and advocating for responsible plastic waste management, we can collectively and significantly preserve our planet for future generations.

“With its focus set on the future, Union Bank continues to lead the way in shaping a better, more sustainable future for generations to come.”
