In a colourful and culturally rich ceremony held at the UBA House, Lagos, the United Bank for Africa (UBA) joined millions across the continent to mark Africa Day 2025 with pomp and pageantry. The event, which showcased the diverse traditions, fashion, music, and cuisines of Africa, reaffirmed UBA’s commitment to the growth and unity of the continent.
Speaking during the celebration, the Group Managing Director of UBA, Mr. Oliver Alawuba, described the day as “one of the best days to be a member of the UBA family.” He praised the beauty and potential of Africa, saying:
“Africa is the most beautiful continent in the world. It is a land with very beautiful women, very handsome and strong men. A land flowing with both material and human resources.”
Mr. Alawuba emphasized UBA’s deep-rooted belief in Africa’s potential and reiterated the bank’s commitment to driving the continent’s development.
“Today, Nigeria and all the 19 African countries where we have presence are showcasing Africa. Africa has the most beautiful culture, customs, food — everything. The best of the world is in Africa. The future of the world is in Africa, and you here are the future of Africa.”
Highlighting the bank’s reach and ambition, he noted that UBA currently serves over 40 million Africans and 5 million non-Africans across 20 countries, with plans to expand into all 54 African nations.
“Our goal is to serve Africa, to develop Africa and make sure the whole world recognizes Africa. Africa cannot grow unless the youth are empowered, and that is why UBA is committed to empowering the youths of Africa to take charge of the future.”
He also urged African countries to seize emerging global opportunities, such as the ongoing tariff wars and the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI), to drive intra-African trade and innovation.
The GMD expressed gratitude for Africa’s abundance — in resources, talents, and youthful population — stating that with over 1.4 billion people and 60% under the age of 30, Africa is well-positioned to lead the future.
“So wherever you are in Africa, the charge on this Africa Day is to ensure that Africa is developed for the people.”
Africa Day, established by the African Union, is observed annually to celebrate the continent’s unity, diversity, and developmental strides. UBA has continued to use the occasion as a platform to unite Africans around the cause of economic growth, cultural pride, and regional cooperation.
“We are celebrating ourselves and the future that will be delivered for Africans,” Alawuba concluded. “This is just the beginning of even greater things in Africa.”
The event drew participation from UBA staff, partners, and cultural performers across the bank’s African operations, making it a truly pan-African celebration.
