The Human Right Liberty Access and Defender’s Foundation (HURIDE) has warned that the ban on twitter in the country has omnious sign for the growth of democracy in Nigeria.
The Executive Director of HURIDE, Dede Uzor A. Uzor, who stated this on behalf of the group in response to Federal Government’s ban of use of Twitter in Nigeria in Lagos weekend said that President Muhammadu Buhari wants to muzzle free expression in the country.
He said: “Buhari has shown that he is not a democrat. He has shown that has not repented from his military mentality by issuing outright order instead of following legal and due process.”
He called Nigerians to rise up and condemn this autocratic cum despotic disposition of Buhari especially now we are celebrating over 20 years of uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria.
Nigerians, he said, should therefore defend this democracy within the confines of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria before President Buhari metamorphose into full blown despot.
The group accused President Buhari of plotting to shut down available avenues where Nigerian citizens use to ventilate their views so as to achieve his Islamic agenda.
HURIDE warned that if Buhari is allowed to escape with this, he would soon ban Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube, and other social media platforms in Nigeria.
The rights group expressed shock that Buhari would not promote peace and unity, rather things that will encourage divisiveness, violence and mutual suspicion among the citizens.
They said Nigerians believed Buhari has changed but he has not, saying that the same Buhari who tackled his predecessor for inability to combat insecurity, has failed to confront the same insecurity since 2015.
“He has failed. He has plunged the country into unimaginable insecurity in the country.
There is fear, hunger and poverty in the land, Prices of food items have gone out of the reach of Nigerians” said the group.
