Tin-Can Port Access Road Rehabilitation Completed As Oyetola Commends Minister Of Works For Swift Action

Efforts to address the persistent gridlock at ports have shown positive results as the Tin-Can Port access road rehabilitation has been successfully completed. Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, revealed the accomplishment on Wednesday, expressing optimism that similar improvements would be extended to access roads of other ports in the country.

The breakthrough comes two months after Minister Oyetola engaged with his counterpart at the Ministry of Works, Dave Umahi, highlighting the urgent need to repair failed sections of ports access roads. In December 2023, Oyetola penned a letter to Minister Umahi, urging collaboration to address gridlock issues, enhance ports efficiency, and contribute to the country’s economic growth.

In response to the plea, Minister Umahi, in a letter dated February 14, 2024, conveyed that the access road to Tin-Can Port in Lagos had been successfully rehabilitated. Additionally, he announced that a contract for the rehabilitation of the access road to Lagos Port Complex had been awarded, with the contractor set to mobilize to the site soon.

Addressing the access road to Onne Port in Rivers State, Minister Umahi confirmed that the contract for its reconstruction was in the processing stage and would be awarded shortly. He emphasized the socio-economic importance of these roads to the ports, underlining the proactive measures taken by the Federal Ministry of Works.

Minister Oyetola commended Minister Umahi’s swift action and expressed gratitude for his significant contribution to improving the Ease of Doing Business at the country’s ports. He highlighted the anticipated positive impacts of these infrastructure improvements, expecting reduced transportation costs, shorter transit times, and enhanced safety for importers and exporters.

Oyetola emphasized the potential increase in foreign investment and improved international trade competencies once the dilapidated port access roads are fully restored. The completion of the Tin-Can Port access road marks a crucial step towards optimizing the efficiency and functionality of Nigeria’s ports.
