…Customs pledges transparency and efficient cargo operations
In a major leap toward digital transformation and improved trade facilitation, the Tin-Can Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has successfully processed its first Single Goods Declaration (SGD) using the newly launched B’Odogwu platform.
The milestone event occurred on Monday, May 12, 2025, and marks a new chapter in customs automation, transparency, and operational efficiency at one of Nigeria’s busiest seaports.
Speaking at the launch, the Customs Area Controller of the Tincan Island Port, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, described the development as a game-changer for cargo processing and service delivery.
“This achievement demonstrates our readiness to embrace technology that streamlines cargo clearance procedures, reduces dwell time, and improves service delivery. The B’Odogwu platform has shown great promise, and we are proud to be pioneers in its implementation,” he said.
Comptroller Onyeka also revealed that the Command has attained 100% network coverage across all terminals and its headquarters, effectively eliminating network failures that once plagued operations. This, he noted, ensures seamless connectivity and efficient processing of cargo-related documentation.
Designed to integrate smoothly with existing Customs systems, the B’Odogwu platform offers a user-friendly interface for declarants, customs brokers, and other stakeholders. It facilitates real-time cargo tracking, document processing, and compliance management—reducing manual intervention and opportunities for delays.
The Controller added that prior to the platform’s deployment, the Command conducted comprehensive training sessions and stakeholder engagements. These initiatives, held in collaboration with system developers, aimed to ensure a smooth transition and included participants such as shipping lines, customs licensed agents, terminal operators, and customs officers.
In a show of industry support, SteveJosh Logistics International Limited, whose declaration was the first successfully processed on the B’Odogwu platform, applauded the Command for the innovation. The company expressed confidence that the new system will significantly reduce transaction costs and boost Nigeria’s competitiveness in global trade.
The Tin-Can Island Port Command reaffirmed its commitment to technological innovation that supports the country’s economic growth and trade facilitation goals.
