The Tin-Can Island Port Command (TCIP) of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reported an impressive revenue generation of N575,505,612,804.59 in the first half of 2024. This marks a remarkable increase of N315,248,670,683.90, or 221.13%, compared to the N260,256,942,120.69 generated in the same period in 2023.

The Command’s operations in the first half of 2024 were significantly aligned with its statutory functions of revenue generation, trade facilitation, and enforcement/anti-smuggling activities. The operations were executed under the theme of the 2024 International Customs Day, “Customs Engaging Traditional and New Partners with Purpose,” focusing on creating an enabling environment for stakeholders to recover from the negative effects of the floating exchange rate through collaboration and the use of technology.

TCIP’s revenue collection for January to June 2024 was N575.5 billion, a substantial improvement from the previous year’s N260.3 billion. This impressive increase was facilitated by the enhanced operational processes and the use of technology, including the NICIS II Software, ‘846’ Non-Standard VIN valuation application, Pre-Arrival Assessment Report (PAAR), Advance Manifest, and Selectivity engine. These tools ensured efficient risk management, reduced delays in cargo clearance, facilitated legitimate trade, and ensured the collection of appropriate duties and taxes.

The command’s enforcement and anti-smuggling unit has been relentless in combating smuggling and other forms of criminality. Several 100% physical examinations were conducted under the supervision of the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Dera Nnadi mni, in collaboration with critical stakeholders. Notable seizures included:

– A variety of rifles and pistols, including models such as RZ17HD, GAMO, and SAR9.
– One used Toyota Corolla.
– Sterling High Quality shotgun cartridges and Seller & Bellot Buck Shot.
– Various units of Mace Pepper Gun.
– Three plastic drums concealing packets of Cannabis Indica and forty-six bags containing 2,144 packets of Cannabis Indica, weighing 1,072 kg, with a street value of N3.216 billion.
– 877 cartons of Barcadin cough syrup with codeine and 82 cartons of Really Extra Diclofenac Sodium tablets, valued at N964.3 million.

The total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of all seizures amounted to N8.9 billion.

In the first half of 2024, the total FOB value of commercial goods exported through Tin-Can Island Ports was N1,032,601,044,744.00, with a total volume of 489,594.50 metric tons. This represents a significant increase from the first half of 2023, which saw an export value of N182,333,764,943.00 and a volume of 291,436.00 metric tons. The highest export commodity by value was soya beans, worth N92,059,078,980.00, while the lowest was self-adhesive, valued at N17,560,865.00.

The Command engaged with various stakeholders, including shipping companies, terminal operators, and barge operators, to enhance operational processes and reduce fraudulent activities. It also hosted guests from the Ministry of Environment and facilitated the use of barges for cargo transport, maintaining business flow in the customs clearance process.

The Command expressed gratitude for the support and direction from Comptroller General of Customs Bashir Adeniyi, MFR, and the management of the Nigeria Customs Service.

Comptroller Nnadi also appreciated the contributions of his team and urged them to continue their support for achieving greater heights.

With the implementation of the e-Customs project and the installation of smart technology at the ports, the Command aims to further boost its capacity to enforce compliance and generate revenue in line with international best practices.
