THIS TOO SHALL PASS: The Nonsense That Wore A Crown

We live in an surprisingly unusual time. In our time, the moral fabrics of society have been thrown to the dogs -the very worst of us. Our time celebrates our worst and subdue the best. In this same time, society crowns what I sadly designate as nonsense with eminence. Men have lost their value, dignity and self worth as a result of the indignation of these “nonsense fellows” who have been crowned with leadership and made to call the shots. Suffice it to say that such a society is neither enviable or commendable and cannot safely be deemed sane. Sadly, that is our time, and our society. A society ever on the downward trajectory to ignominy. We plead technology and never humanity. We hail modernisation and sophistication but bereft of charity and true love. This is easily evidenced in the unwholesome conducts and awkward behavioral traits of our kiths and kin, especially those at the helm of affairs.

We say, albeit sadly true, that the next generation will be worse off. Yet, we forget to remind ourselves that we are passing on a baton of hate, inhumanity, uncharitable dispositions and perversions to the younger folks. Our cultural inheritance have taken a back seat whereas everything foreign and disgraceful is the trending deals. This explains the high surge in what the people of yore deemed ‘efulefu’ in governance. As they rightly say, you can never give what you don’t have. We see the observance, in breach I must admit, of the almost sacred words that those who waters shall themselves be watered. What we see almost always is that those who waters rather than being watered most times die of thirst themselves, and the reasons is not farfetched which boils down on the analysis as follows:

The disposition of mind of those who chose to be for others what they can’t be for themselves is usually selfless; as those who genuinely seek to make the difference in society, family or organizations seldom gets the reward commensurate with their objectives, most times roundly misunderstood or better still hung out to dry by those who feel threatened either by their outstanding performances, diligence or dedication, a situation which does not sit well with them who treasure in backbiting and malicious defamation of character.

In my little sojourn on earth I’ve had cause to ponder on the raison d’être of them that takes pleasure in character assassination, and apprised the benefits which I found nondescript in its intent, purposes and objectivity. People hate for different reasons, chief among which is hating for absolute nothing, such is the situation with some who have the penchant to hate someone simply for being themselves. Such endemic hate are often times without basis, and when confronted so as to inquire the reason (s) for the hate, one realises that those who hate for the mere fun of hating wouldn’t provide any reasonable answers to the inquest; this shows that the mischievous characters hate simply to assuage their battered nerves, most times in a self adulation go out of their ways in gathering others of like minds to hate on those whom they know little or absolute nothing about.

While issues of life, challenges, obstacles and contentious situational imbalances wouldn’t be wished away completely, as they form part of the existential realities of man; which likewise gave impetus to the fact that no individual is totally insulated from them, come it assuredly must, much so is the fact that good men also fall victims to the vagaries and wicked manipulations of the people of the world, more so they get fried easily by those who hitherto had laid siege for them, those who overtime had expected to see their tears and watch them humbled, a past-time of wicked, vindictive neighbors, unfriendly friends cum foes in facade, standby traducers and narrow minded individuals.

In our times and society, some of them “crowned nonsense” take pleasure in competing with those who for reasons of their refined nature aren’t in the knowledge of the nocturnal challengers; gossips which is the stock-in-trade of lower beings, rabblerousers, bootlickers and sycophants, those who seldom ask questions before condemning others, the naysayers to anything positive, who derives pleasure in subjectively assessing anyone they found above board, always fishing in troubled waters, wittingly or unwittingly subjugative in assessment of individuals who by far outshines them, convulsively lying in wait, setting traps here and there to cage their targets and ultimately bringing them to subjugation or utter ruins, always basking in the euphoria of demeaning personalities, what they gain from such wicked acts is surely a topic for another day.

They are vile, arid, despicable and nought that trades on the characters of others for mere pecuniary gains; that man is less a man that treasures in speaking ill of another, either to curry favour or be seen as smart, more so when we know almost next to nothing about those we speak ill of. That is sadly an acceptable norm amongst many circles in our times.

May we be reminded of a fact we all know: we are gifted differently and diversely, and as such can’t always be expected to behave alike; hence an introspective search into oneself reveals hidden treasures of great magnitude, untapped, unaccesed and undeveloped; if people could devote the enormous time they spend on digging into others and dig deeper into themselves they would to their utter astonishment discover that those stuffs they envy in others who overtime developed theirs even much more are lying fallow in them waiting to be tapped.

If indeed we believe strongly that we are all created in the image and likeness of God, then none is without the spark of God in them. Envy, backbiting et al ought not be found among and within us as a people, rather search for true talents inherently deposited in us should form the bulk of our assessment and interest. We should devote more time at seeking to improve on our God given latent talents, and pay less attention at envying others who have been able to identify theirs early in life.

In essence, we are all created with imbued potentials, as such none of us should be in lack, our lack is steamed from the fact that we are not diligent in introspective search into the supernatural of our beings, the essence of the express image of the Almighty. Our lack is because we have left the ancient landmarks that made us a people, ihe ejiri mara anyi, for ways that are largely uncustomary. Uche, ihunanya, idi na otu na ome-nwanne are now lyrics of the past and hardly found amongst us. Men of despicable dispositions and lurid character have found the baton and must not be allowed to hand it over to posterity. They are nonsense fellows, even with the crown, and we must put a full stop to this and much more.

Assuredly, there’s no better time than now to make amends and become more decisive, maka “anara ofu onye oru azu oru nile ka anara ya.” Every society deserves the kind of leaders they get, but then again a resolute society can yet be redeemed, more so when positive reorientation forms the basis of their objectives.
