A tragic incident occurred on Friday, January 31, 2025, during the Nigerian Army’s Bi-Annual Route March near Myhoung Barracks in Yaba, Lagos, resulting in the death of a soldier and injuries to several others.
According to a statement from the Headquarters 81 Division Nigerian Army, the route march—an exercise designed to enhance operational readiness—was being conducted by formations across Lagos State. The march had been announced earlier via various media platforms to inform the public.
However, a private vehicle driver recklessly ran into the troops participating in the exercise, leading to the fatality and multiple injuries. The deceased soldier’s body has been deposited in the mortuary, while the injured are receiving medical treatment at the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Yaba.
The 81 Division Military Police, in collaboration with other security agencies, has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Reacting to the development, the General Officer Commanding 81 Division, Major General Farouk Mijinyawa, extended his condolences to the family of the deceased soldier and prayed for the speedy recovery of the wounded. He also urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue.
Despite the tragic loss, the Division reaffirmed its commitment to training and operational readiness, emphasizing that the incident would not deter its dedication to safeguarding lives and properties in its jurisdiction in line with the Nigerian Army’s constitutional mandate.
