The Nigerian Shippers’ Council, led by Executive Secretary Barrister Akutah Pius Ukeyima, undertook a significant working visit to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), expressing mutual interest in collaboration to bolster the maritime and blue economy sector.
During the visit, NIMASA’s Director General, Dr. Bashir Jamoh OFR, emphasized the crucial role that enabling acts play in the efficiency of government agencies. Dr. Jamoh revealed ongoing efforts by the National Assembly to revise the NIMASA Act, anticipating a substantial enhancement of the Agency’s performance.
In his welcome address, Dr. Jamoh stated, “Your visit is a welcome development, and the cooperation you seek is vital for the success of the Marine and Blue Economy Ministry. Now that you have come on board, it is worthy of note that the Nigerian Shippers Council Act was enacted through Decree 13 of 1978, and you will agree with me that modern-day reality may necessitate another look at your enabling Act.”
Barrister Ukeyima, in turn, commended NIMASA’s Management for their achievements, recognizing their positive impact on the Marine and Blue Economy sector. He expressed a desire for collaboration, aiming to leverage the accomplishments of NIMASA for the benefit of both organizations.
The Nigerian Shippers’ Council, serving as the country’s Port Economic Regulator and a trade facilitation agency, holds the responsibility of promoting fair trade practices within the shipping and port services industry. As one of the agencies under the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, its mandate is to establish an enabling environment and an efficient economic regulatory system in the transport sector.
The visit signifies a strategic move towards fostering synergy between these two key entities, with the ultimate goal of advancing the objectives of the Marine and Blue Economy Ministry.
