Seme Customs Commissions New Facilities To Boost Welfare, Community Engagement

The Nigeria Customs Service, Seme Area Command, has commissioned three newly completed infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the welfare of officers and strengthening community engagement. The commissioned projects include a renovated Senior Officers’ Mess, a fully equipped Gym House, and a modern Office Complex for the Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA).

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, led the commissioning ceremony held at the Command headquarters in Seme, Lagos. His presence was hailed as a clear demonstration of the Service’s commitment to personnel welfare, modernization, and operational excellence.

In his welcome remarks, the Customs Area Controller, Dr. Ben Oramalugo, PhD, described the event as a landmark occasion that reflects the Command’s dedication to progress, teamwork, and service delivery under the current leadership of the Comptroller-General.

“These projects are not just buildings; they represent our collective commitment to improving the working and living conditions of our officers and their families,” Dr. Oramalugo stated. “The Senior Officers’ Mess will foster unity and professional interaction, while the COWA Office Complex will serve as a hub for supporting customs families and empowering our communities.”

Highlighting the Command’s operational achievements, Dr. Oramalugo revealed that the Seme Area Command generated over ₦2.83 billion in revenue between January and April 2025. During the same period, it facilitated the export of more than 184,000 metric tonnes of goods valued at over ₦36 billion. He also noted that intensified anti-smuggling operations led to arrests and seizures with a Duty Paid Value exceeding ₦800 million.

The Area Controller applauded officers and men of the Command for their professionalism and dedication, which he said laid the foundation for the Command’s progress. He also acknowledged the tireless efforts of the COWA members in driving family-centered initiatives and community development projects.

“To the members of COWA, your contributions are deeply appreciated. This new facility will enhance your ability to implement more impactful programs in support of officers’ families and our host communities,” he said.

Dr. Oramalugo also expressed appreciation to the Comptroller-General for his visionary leadership, which he described as the driving force behind the transformation currently taking place across the Nigeria Customs Service. “Your policies built on collaboration, consolidation, and innovation have inspired us to achieve milestones like today’s commissioning,” he added.

He encouraged all officers to make effective use of the newly commissioned facilities, describing them as tools to further improve morale, encourage unity, and enhance productivity. He urged them to remain committed to the values of integrity, professionalism, and service.

The commissioning ceremony marked another milestone in the Nigeria Customs Service’s broader reform agenda, with a renewed focus on personnel welfare, modernization of infrastructure, and stronger ties between the Service and the communities it serves.
