Over the past weekend, the University of Lagos (UNILAG), DaySpring School, and Marvelvine Montessori School emerged as winners in their respective categories at the 2024 Ecobank National Schools’ Teams Chess Competition, held at the Ecobank Pan African Centre in Lagos.

The event, described as Africa’s largest gathering of chess players, saw participation from more than 1200 players across 250 schools spanning 18 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The competition distributed over N15 million in prizes.

Prince Adeyinka Adewole, Vice President of the Nigeria Chess Federation (NCF), lauded the massive turnout and growth of the championship, which debuted last year parallel to the International Chess Federation’s initiation of the World Schools Team Chess Championship. Adewole highlighted the partnership with Ecobank as a critical element in advancing sports through public-private collaboration.

The primary school category was topped by Marvelvine Montessori School, with Scholars Academy and Okikioluwa Junior taking the second and third spots, respectively. In the secondary category, DaySpring School won first place, followed by Platforms School and Ireti Senior Grammar School. The tertiary category saw UNILAG clinch the top position, with the University of Benin and Chess in Slums Africa following.

Ecobank Nigeria’s Managing Director, Bolaji Lawal, reiterated the bank’s commitment to nurturing intellectual and athletic prowess among youths, aligning with Ecobank’s vision for human capital development across Africa. Lawal underscored the importance of integrating these young minds into digital financial services, enhancing their accessibility and convenience.

The event was also graced by the presence of Senator John Owan Enoh, Minister of Sports, represented by Ms Ikana Mbora. The Minister praised the resilience and determination of the participants, embodying the spirited essence of Nigeria.

The NCF, since its establishment in 1975, has actively promoted chess across all levels in Nigeria, organizing numerous national and international tournaments and training players to represent the nation globally. Last year, Platform Schools of Ikeja, Lagos, emerged as the national champions, later representing Nigeria at the World Schools Team Chess Championship in Kazakhstan.
