The body of Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, former chairman of the National Electoral Commission, arrived at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, recently, received by family members, dignitaries, and well-wishers who gathered to honor his legacy.
Among those present was Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State, who described Prof. Nwosu as a true hero of democracy and a model of electoral integrity. In his tribute, Obi emphasized that Nwosu’s life and service embodied the leadership needed to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
Prof. Nwosu is best remembered for his role in overseeing the 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as the most transparent in Nigeria’s history. His leadership of the then National Electoral Commission (NEC) set a benchmark for free and fair elections.
Mourning his loss, Obi expressed hope that future generations would inherit a country where elections reflect the transparency and integrity that Nwosu exemplified. He prayed for eternal rest for the late professor and strength for his family and all who mourn him.
The arrival of Nwosu’s remains marks the beginning of final rites to honor a man whose contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey remain significant.
