PSC Warns Against Abuse of Tactical Units, Approves Appointment of Nine State Commissioners

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has cautioned against the misuse of Tactical Units in state commands, emphasizing that these units must not supplant recognized police departments. The commission noted that some state commissioners have allowed these units to render established departments redundant, even when led by Deputy Commissioners of Police.

This warning was issued during the screening of nine commissioners recommended by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) for appointment and deployment to state commands. The PSC stressed that the newly appointed commissioners must ensure that recognized police departments function effectively.

Meanwhile, the commission approved the appointment of the following officers as state commissioners of police:

– Ibrahim Balarabe Maikaba (Kano State) – CP Zamfara State
– Breret Emmanuel Simon (Plateau State) – CP Taraba State
– Christopher Ado Emmanuel (Niger State) – CP Yobe State
– Olusegun Eyitayo Omosayin (Ondo State) – CP Cross River State
– Adamu Abdullahi Elleman (Jigawa State) – CP Niger State
– Sani Omolori Aliyu (Kogi State) – CP Bauchi State
– Bello Shehu (Gombe State) – CP Katsina State
– Saka Adewale Ajao (Ogun State) – CP FCT Command
– Ojo Adekimi (Ekiti State) – CP Kwara State

The new commissioners underwent an interactive oral interview session coordinated by DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd.), a commissioner in the PSC representing the police.

PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd.), urged the newly appointed CPs to prevent the abuse of Tactical Units and to collaborate with the Deputy Commissioners heading various departments. He expressed concern over the misuse of power by these units and emphasized the importance of maintaining the chain of command.

Similarly, DIG Lakanu advised the officers to build trust with their subordinates and local communities, including youth groups, traditional leaders, and professional organizations such as the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). He also cautioned against the unnecessary creation of special squads.

The PSC reiterated its commitment to upholding professionalism in policing and ensuring that all units operate within their designated functions.
