The Police Service Commission (PSC) and the Ministry of Police Affairs have entered into a renewed partnership aimed at fostering a more efficient, accountable, and citizen-focused Nigeria Police Force.

The partnership was sealed during a courtesy visit by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Anuma Ogbonnaya, who led a delegation of directors and departmental heads to the PSC headquarters in Abuja. The delegation was received by the PSC Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Hashimu Argungu, along with Justice Paul Adamu Galumje (rtd), Commissioner representing the Judiciary; DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd), Commissioner representing the Police; Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, Secretary to the Commission, and other senior management staff.

DIG Argungu commended the initiative, describing it as a vital step toward enhancing communication and cooperation between the two oversight bodies. “There must be robust collaboration between police oversight agencies for effective and efficient policing. This visit is a good beginning, and it is imperative we continue with regular consultations. No one can do it alone,” he stated.

The PSC Chairman reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to working closely with the Ministry in the shared interest of national security, adding that mutual respect and open dialogue are crucial to achieving their objectives.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Police Affairs, Dr. Ogbonnaya emphasized the significance of the visit, noting that it reflects the Ministry’s high regard for the Commission’s vital role. “We recognize that our mandates are intrinsically linked, and effective collaboration is paramount to achieving our shared goals within Nigeria’s security architecture,” he said.

He further highlighted the Ministry’s appreciation for the Commission’s role in overseeing key areas of police management, including recruitment, promotion, discipline, and overall welfare. “Your independence and commitment to upholding standards of professionalism and integrity are vital to building public trust and ensuring the effectiveness of our police,” he added.

Dr. Ogbonnaya also pointed out several areas where stronger collaboration between the Ministry and the Commission could lead to significant improvements, promising continued engagement to strengthen institutional performance in the policing sector.

The meeting marked a promising step forward in fostering synergy between the two institutions, both critical to police reform and service delivery in Nigeria.
