The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hashimu Argungu, has warned that police officers found involved in civil matters such as land, rent, and marital disputes will face sanctions, including the suspension of their promotions. This development comes as part of efforts to address misconduct and reinforce professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force.

Speaking during a meeting with a delegation from the Justice Research Institute, led by Mr. Ade Ipaye, DIG Argungu emphasized that the PSC will no longer tolerate abuse of office by officers meddling in civil matters that are meant to be handled by the courts. “Police officers must stay clear of civil disputes and allow the civil courts to perform their duties,” he said. Argungu added that the actions of the police directly impact the credibility of the Commission, and any failure on the part of the police will reflect poorly on the PSC.

In his remarks, the PSC Chairman assured the public of his commitment to leading a transparent and corruption-free administration. He vowed to maintain accountability in all aspects of the Commission’s operations, stating, “I will never spare thieves wherever I am. We are here to assist the government in fighting corruption.” He also shared his personal commitment to leadership, highlighting his dedication to arriving early and staying late at the office, setting a standard for discipline and transparency.

During the meeting, Mr. Ipaye commended the PSC Chairman for his stance against corruption and expressed his organization’s eagerness to support the PSC in fulfilling its constitutional mandate. The Justice Research Institute will collaborate with the Commission to provide local and international training opportunities, ensuring that PSC staff are well-equipped to oversee the disciplinary functions of the Nigeria Police Force.

In a related development, DIG Argungu announced the establishment of a Joint Oversight of Police Recruitment. This initiative, in partnership with the Inspector General of Police, aims to ensure a transparent and seamless recruitment process into the Nigeria Police Force. The PSC Chairman also revealed the creation of a Police Recruitment Secretariat at the Commission’s headquarters, which will serve as the central hub for coordinating all recruitment activities. The recruitment portal will be housed at the Commission’s Corporate Headquarters to enhance communication, documentation, and overall efficiency.

With these reforms, the PSC hopes to foster accountability, transparency, and professionalism within the police force, contributing to the larger goal of a more efficient and trustworthy police service for Nigerians.
