Dr. Solomon E. Arase, CFR, NPM, fdc, FCIArb, Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), addressed the Plenary Meeting of the Police Recruitment Board, emphasizing the critical role of the recruitment process in shaping the future of the Nigeria Police Force. The meeting, held at the PSC Corporate Headquarters in Abuja, marked the culmination of a meticulous and transparent recruitment drive.

Dr. Arase underscored the significance of the recruitment process, noting its impact on the safety, security, and integrity of the nation. He highlighted that the quality of personnel recruited into the Force over the years has greatly influenced its current image. Political and external influences in past recruitment processes have contributed to challenges within the Force, making the current transparent and merit-based process essential for improvement.

Following a landmark Supreme Court judgment in July 2023 affirming the primacy of the PSC in police recruitment, significant steps were taken to ensure a rigorous and meticulous process. The Police Recruitment Board, comprising representatives from the PSC, the Nigeria Police Force, the Ministry of Police Affairs, the Federal Character Commission, and the Police Trust Fund, was inaugurated on September 4, 2023. This collaborative effort has produced one of the most seamless and thorough recruitment exercises in recent times.

The current recruitment phase aimed to enlist 10,000 Constables, the final phase of a drive to recruit 30,000 constables sanctioned by former President Muhammadu Buhari. The recruitment portal, opened on October 13, 2023, received 609,886 applications, of which 416,323 were shortlisted for physical screening. Subsequently, 171,956 candidates advanced to Computer-Based Tests (CBTs) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). Following medical screening, 43,778 specialists underwent various tests, resulting in the selection of 10,000 candidates.

Dr. Arase praised the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders, which ensured a transparent and fair process. He emphasized that the recruitment process reflects a deliberate effort to build a competent, reliable, and representative Police Force. The final selection, structured to ensure inclusivity, involved selecting 10 candidates from each of the 774 Local Government Areas, as advised by the National Assembly.

To comply with the Nigeria Data Protection Act of 2023, the list of successful candidates will be presented in a manner that ensures their personal data remains secure. Dr. Arase acknowledged concerns about low enrollment from the South-East due to fears of attacks on recruits or their families, highlighting the need to address this issue to encourage greater participation from the region.

Dr. Arase extended gratitude to all involved parties, particularly the Nigeria Police Force, for their support and collaboration. The successful recruitment marks a significant step towards building a competent and reliable Police Force dedicated to service, integrity, and dedication.
