The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), has reiterated the critical role of a well-motivated police force in ensuring a secure and progressive Nigeria. Speaking at the 2024 Annual Lecture Series of the People’s Security Monitor held on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at the Nigerian National Merit Award House, Maitama, Abuja, Argungu emphasized the government’s commitment to equipping the police to tackle crime and criminality effectively.
Represented by the PSC’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Mr. Ikechukwu Ani, the Chairman noted that while security challenges persist globally, Nigeria’s government has implemented mechanisms aimed at achieving a crime-free society. He called on Nigerians to actively participate in supporting security efforts, as “security is everyone’s business.”
Argungu highlighted ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), including regular training programs, provision of essential security gadgets, and a transparent promotion process grounded in fairness, seniority, and available vacancies. He stressed that these measures are designed to enhance professionalism and accountability within the force.
The PSC, he revealed, has also intensified its oversight responsibilities by implementing a zero-tolerance policy for corruption through a whistleblowing initiative and weeding out officers who fail to meet required standards. “While we dangle the stick, we also spread the carrot as motivation for greater performance,” Argungu stated.
The PSC Chairman acknowledged the strides made by the current administration in resourcing and empowering the police, affirming that “we are winning the war” against crime. He expressed his appreciation to the event organizers for recognizing his dedication to security and reaffirmed his belief in Nigeria’s potential as a nation blessed with immense opportunities.
The annual lecture series provided a platform to discuss strategies for addressing security challenges, with DIG Argungu commending efforts aimed at fostering peace and stability in the country. “I believe in one Nigeria, a nation full of promises and great opportunities,” he concluded.
