The recent release of the official gazette, ‘Designation and Protection of Critical National Information Infrastructure Order, 2024,’ by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marks a pivotal advancement in safeguarding Nigeria’s ICT sector. This new directive is set to significantly bolster the protection of vital technological systems, infrastructure, and networks against disruptions and intentional damage.

The gazette emphasizes the administration’s commitment to securing Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII), which includes telecommunications towers, switch stations, data centers, satellite infrastructure, submarine and fiber optic cables, transmission equipment, e-government platforms, and databases. Under the new order, willful damage to these assets is now classified as an offense, reinforcing efforts to mitigate risks that have historically affected the quality and reliability of telecom services.

By instituting these measures, the administration aims to create a more resilient environment for the digital economy, fostering growth and stability in the sector. The new regulations underscore the government’s dedication to enhancing the security and functionality of Nigeria’s technological infrastructure, ensuring a more reliable and robust ICT landscape for the country’s development.
