Police Service Commission Emphasizes Need For Mentally Mobile Policemen In Recruitment

Dr. Solomon Arase CFR, retired Inspector General of Police and Chairman of the Police Service Commission, highlighted the importance of recruiting mentally mobile individuals with fertile minds who can effectively relate to the public. As the screening phase of the ongoing recruitment exercise into the Constable cadre of the Nigeria Police Force concludes on January 31, 2024, Dr. Arase emphasized the need for a paradigm shift in the selection process.

Dr. Arase conveyed this message during a courtesy visit to the Registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Is-haq Olanrewaju Oloyede, CON. In discussions with the JAMB management team, they addressed the necessary conditions for conducting Computer-Based Tests (CBT) for Constable applicants.

The Chairman emphasized the importance of selecting candidates with fertile minds, asserting that a mentally mobile police force is essential for building public trust. Dr. Arase stressed the significance of a knowledge-based police force, drawing on his 42 years of experience. He expressed the desire for a recruitment process that identifies high-achieving individuals, creating a foundation for a more effective police service.

Dr. Arase proposed a shift in the recruitment approach, suggesting that JAMB’s computer-based tests precede the screening exercises. This adjustment aims to identify and eliminate candidates with questionable certificates. He emphasized the goal of producing self-confident policemen capable of performing their duties credibly, and constant training will propel them to new heights.

The JAMB Registrar commended Dr. Arase’s leadership accomplishments and expressed enthusiasm for collaborating on the project to develop a new generation of quality police officers. He advised that the recruitment process consider the unique characteristics of Nigeria’s diverse population, urging the selection of the best candidates from every state and zone.
