As Muslims and Christians observe the holy periods of Ramadan and Lent, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of the Special Protection Unit (SPU) at the Force Headquarters, Olatunji Disu, alongside religious leaders, has emphasized the importance of peace, unity, and compassion in Nigeria’s multi-faith society.
The call was made during a Breaking of Fast event organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, on Tuesday in Abuja.
Speaking at the gathering, AIG Disu urged journalists to continue promoting peace and unity through their work. He commended the professionalism and togetherness demonstrated by members of the media, describing them as key players in fostering harmony in the country.
“We use this opportunity to urge all Nigerians to embody values of compassion, humility, and service in their interactions with one another. This is a call for all faiths to work together for a harmonious and prosperous Nigeria,” Disu stated.
Similarly, the Deputy Imam of Abuja, Yusuf Abdulateef, delivered a message on the significance of Ramadan, describing it as a time not only for fasting but also for spiritual purification and closeness to God.
“Ramadan is not only for us to abstain from eating alone, but it is also a time for us to purify our souls and draw closer to our Creator,” he said.
He further highlighted the special role of Ramadan in Islam, noting its connection to the revelation of the Holy Quran.
“Allah revealed the Holy Quran in the month of Ramadan, and that is why Ramadan is so special to us as Muslims,” he added, emphasizing the importance of the last ten days of Ramadan for deep reflection and seeking Allah’s forgiveness.
Abdulateef also shared a personal experience of how Ramadan fosters unity, recalling instances where Christians and Muslims came together at his mosque to break fast and pray.
“This is one of the special significances of Ramadan. We come together in spirit, unity, and cooperation, despite our different faiths,” he noted.
The Chairman of the NUJ FCT Chapter, Comrade Grace Ike, called on journalists to use their platforms to promote peace and unity. She noted that Nigeria’s diversity, while a strength, has also been tested by ethno-religious conflicts that threaten national cohesion.
“Journalists play a crucial role in shaping narratives that can either unite or divide communities. It is our duty to foster interfaith dialogue and tolerance through fair and unbiased reporting,” she stated.
She further stressed the need for fairness in media coverage, ensuring that no group feels marginalized or misrepresented, as this builds trust among communities and strengthens societal cohesion.
“May Allah guide us in our mission to serve truthfully and justly. May our efforts contribute to a peaceful and united Nigeria. Ramadan Kareem and a Graceful Lenten Season,” Ike concluded.
