The Anambra State Police Command has announced the successful rearrest of Ikemefuna Ossai, a key suspect in the kidnapping and brutal murder of the late Hon. Justice Azuka, who until his death represented Onitsha 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly.
Ossai, who had earlier escaped from police custody, was apprehended on May 7, 2025, in Asaba, Delta State, following an intelligence-led operation spanning several Nigerian states and extending into a neighbouring West African country. The Command disclosed that the suspect attempted to flee upon sighting officers but was swiftly subdued. He sustained a gunshot wound to the leg during the arrest.
According to a statement signed by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the rearrest underscores the Police Command’s commitment to justice, security, and transparency. “This operation is a result of painstaking surveillance and inter-agency collaboration,” the statement read.
The Commissioner of Police, during a briefing with stakeholders including the family of the late lawmaker and the leadership of the State House of Assembly, expressed regret over the lapses that led to the initial escape. He assured the public that lessons have been learned and corrective measures put in place to prevent future occurrences.
Meanwhile, the Command revealed that intelligence gathered from the suspect is currently aiding ongoing operations, as efforts are being intensified to apprehend remaining members of the criminal network responsible for the lawmaker’s murder.
The Anambra State Police Command reiterated its resolve to bring all perpetrators to justice and reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding the lives and property of residents across the state.
Hon. Justice Azuka’s murder had shocked the state, triggering widespread outrage and calls for swift justice. The successful rearrest of the suspect is seen as a significant step toward closure for the grieving family and the legislative community.
