The Anambra State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the brutal murder of two individuals, including a legal practitioner, who were gunned down by yet-to-be-identified assailants in Egbebelu village, Nanka, Orumba North Local Government Area.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, on Thursday, May 15, 2025, led a high-powered delegation comprising the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) and seasoned detectives to the crime scene as part of efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killings.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the victims were attacked by armed men operating on a motorcycle shortly after attending a court session at High Court II, Ekwulobia. Preliminary investigations revealed that the lawyer had secured bail for an accused person in a murder case earlier that day and may have been trailed from the court premises before being ambushed and murdered.

“One of the victims miraculously survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment in a medical facility. He has since been debriefed and is assisting police with valuable information,” the police spokesperson stated.

The bodies of the deceased have been recovered and formally identified by their families. A red Toyota Camry, believed to belong to one of the victims, was also recovered at the scene.

CP Orutugu has ordered the deployment of tactical and intelligence teams to intensify the manhunt for the assailants, describing the incident as a grave attack on justice and law enforcement.

“This is a heinous act and will not go unpunished. We are determined to bring the perpetrators to book,” the Commissioner assured.

The Command urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement by providing any useful information that may aid the ongoing investigation.

Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
