The Nigeria Police Force has addressed accusations from activist Deji Adeyanju and others, alleging that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) is attempting to rewrite the Constitution by requesting details of the organizers and leaders of the planned nationwide protests. In a press release, the Force clarified its position and underscored its constitutional responsibilities in maintaining public order.

The police emphasized that the IGP has never denied citizens their constitutional rights to freedom of association and expression. Instead, the IGP has consistently highlighted the right to peaceful assembly and expression. The Nigeria Police’s role includes ensuring that activities, including protests, do not threaten national security.

Requesting details of protest organizers, their leaders, and schedules, including locations, periods, and routes, is standard procedure. This facilitates effective communication, ensures the safety of all participants, and prevents unlawful activities. The Police reminded Adeyanju and others that Section 45 (1) of the 1999 Constitution allows for restrictions in the interest of defense, public safety, public order, public morality, public health, or protecting the rights and freedoms of others.

The Police highlighted the importance of knowing who is planning assemblies in each state. Allowing faceless groups to operate unchecked could jeopardize the country’s peace and stability, potentially leading to violence and unrest, as experienced during the 2020 #EndSARS protests. Organized labor and other recognized bodies typically provide a more structured and safer environment for public protests.

The Police urged Mr. Adeyanju and other organizers not to mislead Nigerians and called for cooperation to uphold national security and well-being.

The press release, signed by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, reaffirms the Police Force’s commitment to maintaining law and order while respecting citizens’ constitutional rights.
