On the 8th of May 2023, Akolawole Omowunmi, who operates as an Uber driver using his 2009 Silver Toyota Camry Saloon car with Registration number BDG 80 HU, received a call from a person identified as the principal suspect, Adams. The suspect requested a ride from Presken Hotel in Lekki phase 1.
Upon arriving at the location, Mr. Adams asked the petitioner to cancel the ride and instead offered to hire his services offline for three days. The petitioner agreed to the request.
Later that day, around 8:00 PM, Mr. Adams called the petitioner again and asked to be driven, along with his girlfriend, to a supermarket in Lekki. The suspect deliberately left his phone in the car and urged all three of them—the Uber driver, the suspect, and his girlfriend—to enter the mall for shopping.
While inside the mall, the suspect deceived the petitioner and took the car key from him, claiming that he needed to retrieve his phone from the car described above.
After waiting for some time without the suspect returning to the mall, the petitioner went outside and discovered that his car had been taken from its parking spot.
The petitioner spotted the suspect speeding in the car on the opposite side of the road, but he was unable to do anything to stop him. He helplessly watched as the suspect drove off with his car.
Detectives from the Zonal X-Squad Section took immediate action. They tracked the phone number and identified the suspect as Adams Michael Onoriode, whose whereabouts were traced to Edo and Delta states.
