Polaris Bank, in partnership with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), has extended its nationwide tree-planting initiative to Government Secondary School, Gwagwalada, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University in Anambra State. This initiative underscores the bank’s commitment to environmental sustainability and aligns with the global United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030).
The tree-planting exercise at Gwagwalada took place on October 14, 2024, following a similar event at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University days earlier, where Professor K.K. Nwozor praised the bank for its conservation efforts. Polaris Bank’s initiative aims to restore natural ecosystems, fight desertification, and promote resilience against climate change, resonating with the 2024 World Environment Day theme of ecosystem restoration.
Speaking on the initiative, Osazuwa Igbinoba, Directorate Head for Abuja, emphasized that sustainability is deeply embedded in the bank’s business strategy. “Our tree-planting efforts are not just about restoring the environment but also ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come by planting economic trees,” Igbinoba said. Chiwetalu Nwatu, Directorate Head for the South East, echoed this sentiment, noting that Polaris Bank integrates environmental responsibility with its financial operations, guided by Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.
Tree planting, a critical measure in the fight against climate change, helps combat soil erosion, improve air quality, and regulate climate by absorbing carbon dioxide. Polaris Bank’s efforts are part of a larger national campaign that has seen tree-planting initiatives at institutions like Tai Solarin University in Ogun State, Ajingi Community Reserve in Kano State, and the University of Ibadan, Oyo State.
These initiatives not only contribute to environmental restoration but also serve as a call to action for communities, organizations, and individuals to engage in sustainable practices. Through its collaboration with NCF, Polaris Bank remains dedicated to promoting environmental stewardship and inspiring a culture of sustainability across Nigeria.
The bank’s tree-planting efforts are part of its broader commitment to environmental responsibility, community well-being, and corporate social responsibility.
