Former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, describing the late pontiff as a global symbol of faith, humility, and moral courage.
In a heartfelt tribute, Obi said the death of the Holy Father marks the end of an era in the spiritual and moral leadership of not just the Catholic Church but the entire world.
“I received with profound sorrow the news of the passing of the Holy Father, Pope Francis. His death marks the end of another era in the spiritual and moral leadership of the Catholic Church and the wider world,” Obi stated.
Reflecting on his personal encounters with the Pope, Obi recalled meeting him on three different occasions and lauded his unwavering commitment to compassion, justice, and peace.
“Pope Francis embodied the virtues of faith, hope, and compassion. He led with humility, spoke with wisdom, and acted with moral courage. His deep concern for the poor, his steadfast advocacy for moral leadership, and his defence of human dignity earned him admiration across all faiths and nations,” he said.
Obi, a member of the Scholas Occurrentes Foundation founded by Pope Francis, emphasized the Pope’s passionate belief in education, dialogue, and youth empowerment as tools for building a more just and compassionate world.
He further praised the late pontiff’s enduring legacy, noting that “in an age marked by division and uncertainty, his voice remained a steady call to unity, mercy, and justice.”
“On behalf of myself, my family, and millions of Nigerians who found inspiration in his teachings and example, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the universal Church,” Obi concluded. “May God, in His infinite mercy, grant eternal rest to his gentle soul and guide the Church he so lovingly shepherded.”
Pope Francis, known for his progressive views and deep commitment to the underprivileged, passed away earlier this week, leaving behind a profound legacy that touched the hearts of billions around the world.
